limacteric refers to the period before and after menopause during which ovarian activity diminishes and gradually ceases.  This is the transition period which tends to occur over a period of years and begins with the  onset  of  menstrual  irregularities  and  ends  with  the  last  menstrual  period.During  this  period  number  of symptoms  are  experienced  by  women.A  cross-sectional  study  was  conducted  on  168  women  aged  between 45-49  years.In  depth  interview  was  conducted  to  collect  the  necessary  information.  The  data  collected  was analyzed by using SPSS 16.0 version.The prevalence of obesity was found to be the highest 14.3% followed by hypertension 11.3% and DM Type II 9.5%.The most common climacteric symptoms reported were headache, insomnia, frequent urination, pain in knees and lower back, night sweats and stress incontinence.The onset of climacteric symptoms are multidimensional and vary from individual to individual. They reflect combination of genetic  makeups,  physical  activity,  diet,  life  style,  cultural  influences  and  individual  perception  and expectations.

Age at natural menopause may not be same for the entire region. An attempt has been made to define the mean age&#13;
at natural menopause and heath complications during menopause. Cross-sectional study by random sampling&#13;
conducted at S.D.M. Medical College and Hospital, Dharwad. Data was collected by random sampling, 115 women&#13;
aged 51 to 55 years were included in the study group. In depth interview was conducted for collecting information&#13;
about their sociodemographic information, anthropometry, health problems and symptoms perceived by them.&#13;
Statistical analysis by SPSS ver. 16.0. The mean age at natural menopause among Karnataka women was&#13;
45±9.12year.The incidence of obesity was 43.5%, followed by hypertension -33.0%; type-II diabetes- 19.1% among&#13;
the study group.The prominent symptoms reported by post menopause women were vasomotor symptoms,&#13;
psychiatric symptoms, bladder problems and other somatic symptoms. Age at natural menopause in women of North&#13;
Karnataka is early and the health complications resulted may be the result of hormonal imbalance.
